SDG 6.5.4 Sustainable water extraction on campus

The University uses several methods to obtain water sustainably:

  • Rainwater Harvesting: The University collects rainwater from building rooftops and low-lying grassy areas and stores it in tanks beneath buildings or underground. The water is used for non-potable purposes such as watering plants, flushing toilets, and cleaning.
  • Reclaimed Water Use: Greywater and other process water generated on campus is treated and purified for reuse. Sources include the rainwater reclamation systems of the Holistic Education Village and the Weiche Building, the greywater system of the Liangshan Building, recycled reverse osmosis (RO) reject water from the engineering and academic buildings, and recycled swimming pool backwash water. This substantially reduces the University’s reliance on municipal tap water.
  • Groundwater Pumping: Groundwater is drawn from legally permitted wells, and pumping volumes are closely monitored.
