SDG 6.5.3 Off-campus water conservation support

Sustainable Water Resource Management and Green Campus Initiatives

Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) is committed to environmental sustainability and water resource governance, and it expresses its University Social Responsibility (USR) through cross-sector collaboration among industry, government, and academia, international academic exchange, and plastic reduction at the source on campus. On water treatment technology and safety, CYCU takes part in technical exchanges and site visits with Dutch water management experts, tests raw water at the Xinshan Water Treatment Plant, and promotes drinking water safety education. To develop future environmental engineering talent, CYCU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Taipei City Public Sewage Treatment Department and five other Taiwanese universities. Under this partnership, students gain hands-on experience at the Dihua and Neihu Sewage Treatment Plants, covering wastewater treatment processes, water quality analysis, and environmental education. Internationally, faculty and students from the Department of Environmental Engineering took part in the 2025 Four-University Taiwan-Japan Academic Symposium with The University of Kitakyushu, Prefectural University of Kumamoto, and National Taipei University of Technology, focusing on water resources management and environmental data analysis. CYCU also teamed up with Origin Social Enterprise Co., Ltd. to launch the “Zero-Waste Hydration for a Sustainable Campus” program on the University’s 69th Anniversary and Alumni Day, with low-carbon refill stations that encourage students, faculty, and alumni to bring reusable water bottles. The program supports the University’s vision of a circular, net-zero, and sustainable future.

Key Highlights and Impact

  • Industry-Government-Academia Partnership: Under the MOU with Taipei City’s Sewage Treatment Department, students receive practical training at the Dihua Plant (which treats 500,000 tons a day by conventional biological treatment) and the Neihu Plant (which treats 240,000 tons a day using a stepped VIP nitrogen and phosphorus removal method), learning water quality monitoring and facility maintenance.
  • International Academic Exchange: Builds research collaboration between Taiwanese and Japanese universities on water governance, waste management, and climate resilience, while strengthening cross-cultural ties.
  • Green Campus and Water Governance: Combines exchanges with Dutch water experts, rigorous raw water testing, and campus-wide plastic reduction to build a sustainable, low-carbon campus.
