SDG 7.2.4 Plan to reduce energy consumption

Chung Yuan Christian University has established and continues to implement an energy efficiency plan to reduce total energy consumption.

  1. Policy and governance:
    1. ISO 50001 Energy Management System (EnMS) adopted in September 2022, together with an Energy Policy Declaration.
    2. Energy Saving and Carbon Reduction Committee chaired by a Vice President; the Environmental Safety Center leads implementation and auditing.
    3. Each unit appoints an energy management officer, and an internal audit system is in place.
  2. Annual energy-saving action plans:
    1. Prepared each year under ISO 50001, with 3, 3 and 4 approved actions in 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively.
    2. Electricity saved: approx. 113,400 kWh (2023), 243,702 kWh (2024) and 246,942 kWh (2025).
  3. Air-conditioning efficiency:
    1. Old chillers and chiller systems replaced: 3 units (2023), 7 (2024), 4 (2025); air-handling units replaced: 108, 125 and 184 units.
    2. Air-cooled chillers upgraded to water-cooled systems, with efficiency gains of 30% or more.
    3. Variable-frequency drives and cooling-tower descaling devices added, bringing a further efficiency gain of 10% or more.
    4. Cooling towers (100 RT and above) with descaling devices increased from 8 (2023) to 12 (2025), targeting 18 by 2028 and 20 by 2029.
  4. Lighting efficiency:
    1. LED replacement building by building since 2019, with 26,289 luminaires replaced to date.
    2. Indoor LED share rose from 86% (2023) to 94% (2025), targeting 99% by 2027 and 100% by 2028.
    3. Outdoor walkway lighting fully converted to LED in 2024; stairwell lighting is being converted to motion sensors or automatic blinking devices.
  5. Smart metering and monitoring:
    1. Smart electricity meters increased from 805 (2023) to 1,058 (2025–2026), targeting 1,196 by 2027.
    2. Common classroom air-conditioning and teaching-building lighting are connected to the energy management system with automatic scheduling.
    3. 149 laboratories and research spaces will be added to electricity monitoring and air-conditioning management by 2027.
  6. Renewable energy:
    1. Solar PV installed: 10.08 kWp (self-use), 180.46 kWp (self-generated, sold to the grid) and 1,510 kWp (leased-roof installation), with a further 350 kWp under construction.
    2. Expansion targets: 701.5 kWp by 2028, 807 kWp by 2030 and 1,838 kWp by 2049.
  7. Results:
    1. Energy Use Intensity (EUI) fell from 104.2 to 82.79 kWh/m²/yr, a 20.5% reduction over ten years.
    2. Average annual electricity saving rate of 2.22% over 2015–2024, exceeding the government standard of 1%.
    3. Total energy consumption decreased from 21,171,736 million calories (2023) to 21,049,316 million calories (2025).
