SDG 10.6.6 Support for underrepresented groups

Chung Yuan Christian University provides special education counseling and support services for students from minority and disadvantaged groups, including students with disabilities, Indigenous students, students from families in special circumstances, and economically disadvantaged students. Services include academic tutoring, learning and daily-life assistants, psychological and daily-life counseling activities, and special education consultation.

To protect the educational rights of students with special needs, Chung Yuan Christian University has established a Special Education Program under the Special Education Act and related regulations, covering enrolled students who hold an official identification certificate as well as those suspected of needing assessment. The program is reviewed and promoted each semester by the Special Education Promotion Committee and carried out jointly by Academic Affairs, General Affairs, Student Affairs (through the Special Education Student Resource Center), Admissions and the academic departments. It is funded by Ministry of Education subsidies and campus accessibility grants, with the university covering any shortfall, and aims to improve students’ learning and daily-life adaptation, build their independence and problem-solving skills, and create an accessible, friendly campus. Its main work includes:

  • Convening the Special Education Promotion Committee every semester and conducting student identification and assessment.
  • Learning support: course adjustment consultation, learning-strategy coaching, student assistants (note-taking, real-time transcription, recording), supplementary tutoring, and exam accommodations (extended time, individual exam rooms, oral exams).
  • Daily-life support: motorcycle and car parking permits, friendly dormitory rooms, social activities, and information updates.
  • Assistance services: assistive device loans and applications, classroom changes and adjustments, dedicated funding for accessible spaces, and applications for scholarships and tuition reductions.
  • Transition services: new-student transition meetings, career counseling, graduate transition meetings, and employment follow-up.
  • Counseling services: emotional support, referral to counseling or medical services, case conferences, and professional consultation for faculty, students and parents.
  • Space and environment: campus-wide accessibility reviews and improvements, and a dedicated Special Education Student Resource Center space.
  • Training and awareness: training for support personnel and campus-wide special education awareness programs.

In accordance with the Education Act for Indigenous Peoples, CYCU has established the Indigenous Students Resource Center. By bringing together resources from inside and outside the University, the Center works to build a multicultural campus identity. It helps Indigenous students adjust to campus life, offers counseling, and connects them with career planning resources, giving them comprehensive guidance in support of their academic success.

Chung Yuan Christian University has established guidelines and procedures for financial aid programs designed specifically for economically disadvantaged students, so that they have the financial support they need to complete their studies.

CYCU works to remove physical barriers so that people with disabilities have equal access to the campus. Its accessibility improvements focus on two areas: accessible pathways and accessible facilities. The University has also adopted guidelines for transportation subsidies for students with disabilities who have difficulty commuting on their own, so that they can reach classes and campus resources without obstacles.
