About Our Program

To encourage university students to step out of the classroom and to combine university resources with local high schools in promoting local revitalization and community service, faculty and students from Chung Yuan Christian University, along with Fudan High School and Yang Ming High School in Taoyuan City, traveled to Tianliao Community in Hengshan Township, Hsinchu County, for an immersive “stay in the countryside for a night.” This initiative allowed young students to experience traditional rural life and hospitality. Through activities such as firefly watching, mountain cleanups, sharing meals and companionship with local elders, and bamboo craft experiences, students and villagers learned and interacted together, bringing youthful energy and vitality to the Tianliao Community.

Our Initiatives

Tianliao Community, located in Hengshan Township, Hsinchu County, is a traditional Hakka farming village where residents primarily sustain themselves by growing vegetables and fruits and raising livestock. Due to a lack of local job opportunities, there’s been significant outward migration, leaving the community largely populated by elders over 80 and young children. To invigorate community development and allow university students to learn life wisdom from the elders outside the classroom, Professor Chiu Tien-Ding from Chung Yuan Christian University’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering led students into Tianliao Village for service. Integrating the theory of “Caring Economics,” the rural experience helped students understand the vital relationship between the primary industry of agriculture and the socio-economic body, instilling a sense of humanistic care in their hearts.
