SDG 6.3.4 Water-conscious building standards

Chung Yuan Christian University is committed to reducing water consumption. It follows the relevant building standards to improve water efficiency and to reuse wastewater.

  • Green Building Certification: New buildings on campus must meet national green building standards, including water conservation requirements. For example, the Wei-Che Building, completed in 2011, earned a Bronze-level green building certificate, and the Zhi-Xing Building, completed in 2019, received the top Diamond-level certificate in 2020.
  • Water-Saving Labels: When faucets or toilet flushing systems are repaired or replaced, the University uses equipment that meets national standards and carries a water-saving label. The campus has installed 130 waterless urinals. Calculated at 6 liters saved per flush and 10 uses per day, the University estimates that they save about 285 tons of water a year.
  • Water Recycling System: The water recycling system collects wastewater from buildings, reverse osmosis (RO) reject water, and process water. After simple treatment, the water is piped to toilet flushing systems. All new buildings are fitted with rainwater harvesting systems, which can also be connected to toilet flushing or irrigation systems to reduce demand for water.
