Rich Plant Ecology
Located on the outskirts of Zhongli District’s urban center, Chung Yuan boasts abundant ecological greenery and a dense irrigation canal system. Two irrigation canals run through the campus and connect to the ponds on the south side, forming a unique water culture landscape. Through the organic integration of campus green spaces and open spaces, the university fulfills its functions in ecological conservation, flood retention and water conservation, and environmental education. This initiative re-intertwines the green belt and blue belt, providing the public with spaces to connect with nature while reshaping a comfortable environment where people, greenery, and water coexist. A multi-layered planting system consisting of large trees, shrubs, and grassland forms an ecological habitat with high biodiversity, achieving an overall green coverage rate of 46%.
The U.S. Forest Service’s i-Tree Eco system was utilized to conduct a benefit analysis. The inventory results showed that there were 2,122 arbor trees of 124 species on campus, of which 62 species and 1,494 trees were native to Taiwan, demonstrating a rich native ecosystem. The trees as a whole have a total annual carbon sequestration of 16.61 metric tons, of which camphor trees have the highest carbon sequestration; total carbon storage reached 1,021.1 metric tons, of which banyan trees have the highest storage; and they can produce 44.28 metric tons of oxygen and remove 689 kg of pollutants each year. In addition, trees also provide the benefits of intercepting precipitation, reducing surface runoff, and lowering flood risk, demonstrating excellent resilience regulation functions.
