SDG 6.5.6 Promoting conscious water usage on campus

Since 2024, Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) has partnered with Origin Social Enterprise Co., Ltd. on the “Zero-Waste Hydration for a Sustainable Campus” initiative. On the University’s Anniversary and Alumni Day, CYCU offered a low-carbon, waste-free water refill service and encouraged students, faculty, staff, and alumni to bring reusable bottles and refill them at designated water stations. The aim is to cut single-use bottled water and promote plastic reduction, lower carbon emissions, and resource circularity. In line with the Ministry of Environment’s heat resilience campaign, the initiative also raises awareness of proper hydration and the prevention of heat-related illness. Smart water-use monitoring devices have been installed on the drinking fountains in the Huai-En Building and the Information Management Building to track the number of plastic bottles avoided, carbon reductions, water consumption, and electricity use, and a campus drinking fountain map has been produced. By pairing technology with everyday behavior, CYCU makes the environmental benefits measurable and visible, and involves the campus community in building a circular, net-zero, and sustainable campus.

Since 2012, Chung Yuan Christian University has held an annual Water and Energy Conservation Poster Design Competition, which invites students to promote water and energy conservation creatively. Through design work, students deepen their understanding of sustainability, and the competition encourages the whole campus community to adopt greener habits and make saving water and energy part of daily life.
