Indigenous Community Construction Guidance and Management Project

Commissioned by the Council of Indigenous Peoples, faculty from Chung Yuan Christian University lead the “Indigenous Community Construction Guidance and Management Project,” which builds the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into indigenous community development. By identifying challenges such as infrastructure gaps in remote areas and climate resilience, the project contributes, directly and indirectly, to national indigenous policymaking and strategic planning.

The project covers roads, housing, public facilities in urban and rural areas, infrastructure in the Hualien–Taitung area, and the mainstreaming of culturally friendly spaces. The team has set up an indicator monitoring and reporting mechanism for adaptive management, adjusting interventions as climate and social conditions change. The project also strengthens cooperation among central and local governments and local communities, improving environmental quality and cultural inclusiveness while narrowing the urban-rural development gap.

CYCU OBU Dual-Degree Program Conducts English Review: Partnering with Local Shops in CYCU Night Market to Advance National Sustainability Goals

First-year students in the Oxford Brookes University (OBU) dual-degree program at Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) completed a design review conducted entirely in English. Under the theme “Think Global, Act Local,” students worked with CYCU Night Market vendors to build 1:1-scale micro-architectural installations. The 2+2 program contributes, directly and indirectly, to national policymaking on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), from identifying local challenges and formulating strategies to planning future scenarios, monitoring the results of interventions, and practicing adaptive management. This hands-on project brings global design education together with national sustainable governance practice.

Building an International USR Pathway: CYCU and Malaysia’s UCSI University Partner for Sustainable Community Design

Since 2021, Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU) has had a long-term University Social Responsibility (USR) partnership with UCSI University in Malaysia. Through international capstone projects, faculty and students from both universities work together each year on a range of sustainability themes, including watershed research, cultural heritage preservation, sustainable architecture, and mangrove ecosystem conservation. With community empowerment at the core, the joint teams analyze local issues and propose practical solutions.

By building a continuous USR pathway that spans “educational grounding, local empowerment, and international synergy,” CYCU uses participatory workshops and hands-on projects to develop interdisciplinary talent with social design thinking and practical field skills who can work across borders.
